So for my first Game a Month Challenge, I’m going to be starting simple.I’m going to make a Match-3 game similar to Bejeweled or Candy Crush. I chose this for a number of reasons. For one, it’s a simple style of game so I know the scope is more than attainable in my free-time in a month.. There is also a great tutorial series by Mister Taft Creates that follows exactly this topic using the Godot game engine. Even though I’ve used the Godot engine a little before and could probably wing it, I’m still fairly new to it and I like the idea of following along a tutorial so that I can hopefully learn some Godot best practices and learn about unique Godot features that I might otherwise overlook, plus it gives me some nice art assets to start off with.
I plan to use the tutorial as a baseline for getting the core match-3 game mechanics and then plan to deviate from it and add my own spin to the game. I don’t really play puzzle or match-3 games so this is a little out of my comfort zone. I’dd consider that a good thing though because it forces me to think about types of games and game-play mechanics that I wouldn’t normally deal with, knowledge that might come in handy in unexpected ways down the line. I also have my wife who loves Candy Crush and similar games and she will likely be helping to make some design suggestions for the game.
